Ophthalmology Outpatients

The Department of Ophthalmology can be found on the ground floor of the Outpatients Block, exactly opposite to the Pharmacy Department. It is open daily; Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 07.00 to 14.15 hrs, Wednesday and Friday from 07.00 to 15.45hrs and
Saturday from 07.00 to 12.00hrs.

The department may be contacted on telephone numbers 2545 4480/1.

The Department of Ophthalmology is managed by the Director, Mr Thomas Fenech, together with the Consultants, Mr Franco Mercieca and Dr. Jan Janula.

The nursing and clerical staff is managed by Ms. Antonia Azzopardi (Nurse in-charge) whose job is to assure that the services offered are delivered efficiently and in the patient’s best interest.

The Department also includes the Orthoptics Clinic which is managed by Mr Martin Francalanza and Ms Celine Pace, who specialise in cases of, Strabismus-Squints, Amblyopia, Double Vision and Visual Field Testing.

Ms Annabelle Grech offers Optometry services, which is the examination for, vision correction with the assistance of spectacles. This service is only offered to patients that have undergone a cataracts operation.

Mr Mark Bugeja offers Ocular Prosthesis services for those persons who require an artificial eye.

How to make an appointment 

     New Case appointment: A referral is required from the family GP or a doctor in the Health Centres. The referral is to be posted to or by hand, left at the Main Reception, Mater Dei Hospital. 
     Urgent Cases: First must be registered in the Emergency Department, and then are examined in the Casualty Eye Clinic within the Ophthalmic Outpatients (mornings) and the Ophthalmic Ward (afternoons). 
     Follow-up appointment: Are booked at the Ophthalmic Department reception after your visit. 
     If you cannot attend for an appointment, you are to advise the department concerned and then, come to the Department to make an alternative appointment. In case that the patient is unable to come personally, the appointment book may be sent in by post. Appointments by telephone are not given. 
     Transport to attend for an appointment can ONLY be booked with Doctor’s approval.

Important Points to know

• Appointments for eye examinations (refraction) are only made for patients who have undergone a cataracts operation.
• Patients should always be accompanied, as they may be unable to drive back especially if the application of certain eye drops is required during the visit.
• Dark sunglasses should be worn after the application of these eye drops as the eye will be sensitive to strong light.
• The Yellow Card (Schedule V) should be brought along for every visit as there may be changes to the current medication or a new treatment may be prescribed.
• This card is issued only to patients who suffer from glaucoma, and is for an indefinite period with permit renewals from DTC.
• Information regarding the Cataracts list will ONLY be provided to patients, or their relatives, on presentation of the patient’s ID Card.
